2014 - Starting at the Jetty

Earlier this week two visits were undertaken at the Jetty to get things started at our third main summer site.

On Wednesday the 9th of July Carlton, Ben and Elinor did the last of the net clearance and opened the nets for two hours before dusk. Things would have been set up earlier however the lane was blocked by another (BBNP) vehicle for a short period. Only two species caught but 11 birds in total caught was a respectable start for the site this year. A bonus to the visit was Nigel, Joyce, Harvey, Kai and Henry Gervis, from Ty Mawr, joining Carlton and his family to witness a bit of the ringing.

The following morning Jerry and Sophie did the first morning visit of the year at the Jetty and despite the lovely sunshine on the nets a respectable 29 birds were caught. Peter and Ted joined them at the respectable time of 9 o'clock and 'helped' for the last 2 and a half hours. Following the visit Jerry and Peter lugged a Ladder and Ted (not sure which was heavier!?) across the two fields of waist high hay to check the Cathedine Barn Owl box. Much to Ted's disappointment, despite plenty of Barn Owl Pellets indicating the barn has been in regular use it obviously wasn't used for breeding this year, perhaps because of the old, large, disused Wasp's nest from last summer that was found in the box. Either way, with the box only being up a year or two, it all seemed very promising for next year and Ted soon got over his disappointment with a visit to Jerry's to see the chickens!
