Another Roost and CES 10

On Wed 12 Aug, Alan and Ron tried another roost at the jetty; but a maximum of only about 10 hirundines were seen at any one time. Conditions were perfect, so the 4 Swallow and 3 Sand Martin were a reasonable sample of what was present. A couple of Llangorse residents enjoyed the close-up views of the various species caught, and the evening ended with a total of 12 + (3). The roost was followed by a fine display of meteor activity (the new moon, clear sky and lack of light pollution at the Lake, giving excellent viewing conditions), and a spell with a bat detector. At least two Greater Horseshoe Bats were flying around the hedgerow between the point & RB2 fields, and there were lots of Pipistrelle sp around the hut/garden area, also at least one Noctule detected.

Alan and Ron overnighted in the Ringing Hut, and were up at 05.00 for CES 10; they were pleased that the heavy rain (forecast for late morning) was delayed, and they enjoyed dry conditions. The session ended on 25 + (11); details for the two sessions as follows -

Alan did his usual late cut of the path to nets 4-7 during the afternoon of 11th, but the net lane cut was delayed until after the CES session (in-case the disturbed vegetation affected bird activity).
