A busy end to June 2015 (CES 6 RB2 - 2 and CANGO 2015)

On Sat 27th, Jeremy did CES 6, and Andy/Jerry were in rb2. A bit of a breeze picked up later in the morning, but conditions remained mainly overcast, and both sites had good catches. The CES total was 38 + (15), and rb2 was 54 + (16). A regular trickle of Chiffchaff through the reedbed kept Andy/Jerry fit, needing trips back to the hut for AA rings. The numbers of young warblers suggesting a good breeding season, and Redstart, Blue Tit and Great Tit were recaptured having been ringed earlier as nestlings. The new (short) net across the ditch was well worth putting up, and contributed almost a third of the rb2 catch. Several ringed adult Reed Warbler were caught, but only two were new (for the year) to add to our RAS.

Sun 28th saw our regular Canada Goose roundup, and although the forecast indicated light rain until early afternoon, this had passed through soon after starting, and the light breeze provided ideal conditions. A large contingent from Aberfan Canoe Club, together with Peter Slater & family, and Bob Medland, brought the geese in, with only one escaping (though two more flew out of the pen later). Catching birds in the pen, and passing them to the waiting ringers, were George and Peter, Sue Parkinson and Jerry were scribing, and Alan Ashman/Bob Webber were operating the weighing scales (having brought them, and the catching pen from CVRS).

In total 250 Canadas were ringed, of which 44 were goslings (a further 51 birds were released at the end, when the rings ran out). A total of 205 geese already had rings - the majority of which were LRGp rings (the oldest from 2003 and 2004), though one bird had been ringed by Ron in 2006, and two had Radipole rings from 2011. Two birds had been ringed elsewhere (they also had red colour rings), so were probably from Lake Windermere, where population dynamics and movement studies are being undertaken by the RSPCA, please see here and here for previous Windermere exchages. One bird had been double ringed - firstly in 2010, and again in 2013.
