Canada Goose 5257895 was ringed (gosling) on 3 July 2011, while 5287998 (also gosling) was ringed on 30 June 2019, both had their rings read on 9 December 2021 at Bondfield Park, Caerphilly - 3812 & 893 days respectively, 39 kms, 177 degrees. Interesting that they are now together as these are the first records since ringing - maybe they met up at the Lake in 2020 or 2021 when Covid prevented us from doing a roundup. We have had sightings of other birds in the Caerphilly area, though not at this site - maybe more checks of the geese there are needed.
Blackcap AKR1303 was ringed (young male) on 4 September, and was re-caught on 16 September at Westdown Plantation, Wiltshire - 12 days, 119 kms, 130 degrees.
With a cold spell for the first few days of December we decided to "rest" our two feeder sites from netting, and then on the 5th we heard that bird flu had been discovered near the Lake so all ringing had to be suspended. With no ringing during the month (only the 12th time we have failed to ring in December - the last time in 2000), our total ringed remains at 2696. This is still our 5th highest year total, so a very good year considering the various restrictions - Covid, blue-green algae and Avian Flu. The species variety was a respectable 49, just above the mid point of our "all time" range (38 - 57), but our joint second highest for the last 10 years.
