Good coverage for Mid November & two more Canada Goose recoveries

Peter and Alan started the second half of November on Sunday 15th, with an afternoon/roost. Catching was still slow so they opted to put up a net at the feeders (for a short time) - which produced most of the day's retrap catch. They ended on a respectable 14 + (19) with 6 more Redwing at the roost. At least two other Redwing escaped from the nets, along with another probable Fieldfare (but a bit dark to be sure). Jerry tried a mid morning - mid afternoon visit on Monday, and caught just 4 birds (while doing site management), though they did include a Blackcap and a Lesser Redpoll.

Details for the two days were Wren (1), Robin (1), Redwing 6, Blackcap 1, Blue Tit 2 + (10), Great Tit 1 + (6), Treecreeper 1, Nuthatch (1), Starling 2, Chaffinch 2, Goldfinch 2, and Lesser Redpoll 1.

On Thursday 18th Andy, Jeremy, Ron and Jerry tried a first visit to the Pennorth birdcrop. On arrival there was a decent flock of Linnet and a smaller group of Chaffinch (Andy had recently counted 400 & 100 there) but soon after setting the nets numbers had reduced (and the birds then disappeared). They were relocated on a weedy root crop about 400 yards away. With a choice of feed sites so close together it looks like our catching attempts may not be very successful this winter. As a consolation Ron (who had the furthest to travel) got to ring the single Dunnock that was caught.

Jerry returned to the scrub on Saturday 20th for an afternoon/roost. His catch was only 7 + (1) but included 3 Redwing and 2 Siskin. Next was Alan L on late afternoon Sunday, mainly to spend time checking the playback system, so he only used two nets - for (3) Robin. On Monday Jerry started the session, and Andy took for another afternoon/roost, the catch of 4 + (4) which included 2 Redwing and a Lesser Redpoll. On Wednesday Jerry did another afternoon/roost for 7 + (3) which included 3 Redwing and a Siskin.

The mix for this run of four visits was Wren (2), Robin (8), Blackbird 1, Redwing 8, Blue Tit 2 + (1), Chaffinch 1, Lesser Redpoll 1, Siskin 3, and Bullfinch 2. Another Bullfinch that was developing scaley legs was not ringed, and has now been caught three times in the last few weeks.

5233969 was ringed on 25 June 2017, and was shot at Glasbury, Powys on 9 November 2021 - 1598 days, 12 km, 18 degrees.

5275947 was ringed on 26 June 2016, and was shot at Letton, Herefordshire on 30 October 2021 - 1952 days, 49 km, 30 degrees.
