On Wednesday 5 July, Carlton and Andy were in the garden doing the CES, it was sunny for the whole session, which probably reduced their catch.
The total of 20 + (8) was a bit disappointing, after our two recent high catches. The period of CES 7, which this extra visit took place in, has regularly been our most successful session, but, given the earlier breeding season this year, it's not surprising that the maximum numbers advanced to CES 5 & 6.
Jerry was in rb2, and with a 3JP Redstart, and 3JJ Cettis Warbler, caught while putting up the nets, he was expecting a good catch. In the end it was only a modest 30 + (8), but included two more Reed Warbler for the RAS. Even a tape playing, failed to entice any more Redstart into the nets (one flew over a net in full sun), though the catch of the other species seemed to shift from the "end net" to the "tape net".
The mix of species for the day was - Wren 3, Robin 3, Redstart 1, Blackbird 2 + (2), Song Thrush 1 + (1), Cettis Warbler 1, Reed Warbler 17 + (7), Blackcap 3 + (1), Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 6 + (1), Blue Tit 5, Great Tit 1, Long-tailed Tit 1, Treecreeper (1), Nuthatch 1, Greenfinch 1 and Bullfinch 3 + (3).
