During the last week, visits have been made to three reed beds for our RAS Reed Warbler study.
On Monday 19th June, Andy and Jerry completed our first visit, to a new site near the Sailing Club. It was a bit disappointing, with just 11 birds ringed, and no re-captures, but is expected to improve when there are more juvenile birds active.
On the evening of Tuesday 20th, Carlton tried the jetty, and had a catch of 17 + (9). There were a few Swallow/Sand Martin about, but he failed to attract any to the tapes/nets.
The following morning, Alan L continued at the jetty, with 16 + (3), while Andy and Jerry were in rb2, for 23 + (14).
Wednesday was forecast to be the last day of the recent heatwave, and future visits could see netting conditions improve.
A summary of species for all of the catches - Wren (1), Blackbird (1), Robin 2, Redstart 1, Cettis Warbler 1, Reed Warbler 30 + (18), Sedge Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 8, Garden Warbler 5, Blackcap 3, Blue Tit 7 + (3), Long-tailed Tit 2, Treecreeper 1 + (1), Bullfinch 3, Lesser Redpoll (1) and Reed Bunting 3 + (1).
The Reed Warbler recaptures included an additional seven individuals for our RAS. The Cettis Warbler was a juvenile bird caught at the jetty. The Lesser Redpoll was a female (with good brood patch), in rb2; this species is rarely caught by us during the breeding season, and had been ringed, as a young bird, in the garden, in Nov 2016.
