Scrub netting late September

Jerry had a short session on Thursday 17th (after early rain had passed and before breezy conditions increased early afternoon). He only caught 7 birds, made up of Robin 1, Blackcap 1 + (1), Chiffchaff 1, and Blue Tit 3.

The next day Jeremy had an early start (finishing at mid day before the next rain arrived) for a more reasonable 22 + (6). His mix was made up of Wren 1, Blackbird (2), Cettis Warbler 1, Blackcap 8, Chiffchaff 5, Goldcrest 3 + (3), Blue Tit 2, Great Tit 2, and Treecreeper (1).

A week of decent weather was then forecast, so we had a run of visits. On Tuesday 22nd, George and Ron found their way back to the Lake (after many visits to NWR with Goldcliff RG), for a morning session, before Jerry took over early afternoon. The day catch was a very respectable 35 + (7), made up of Great-spotted Woodpecker 1, Dunnock 2 + (1), Song Thrush 1, Cettis Warbler (1), Blackcap 3, Chiffchaff 7 + (1), Goldcrest 5 + (1), Coal Tit 1, Blue Tit 5 + (1), Great Tit 5 + (1), Goldfinch 3, Long-tailed Tit 1, Chaffinch 1, and Bullfinch (1).

Jerry was there the next day, and after a delayed start (because of early rain) it was much quieter. He only caught 10 birds - Dunnock (1), Robin (1), Blackcap 1, Chiffchaff 5, Goldcrest 1, and Blue Tit 1. The next series of visits had the same, or marginally better numbers.

On Thursday 24th Carlton had an 8 + (2) total, made up of Chiffchaff 4 + (2), Goldcrest 1, Blue Tit 2, and Great Tit 1.

On Friday 25th, Jerry had a marginally better session with 9 + (3), made up of Dunnock (1). Blackbird 1 + (1), Blackcap 3, Chiffchaff 5 + (1). The weather then turned more changeable with some rainy periods.

Andy was there on Saturday 26th, and had 11 + (1), comprising Robin 1, Blackbird 1, Reed Warbler 1 (a very late bird), Blackcap 4, Chiffchaff 4, and Bullfinch (1).

He was back on Monday 28th for a short afternoon session. The catch was just 7 birds - Chiffchaff 4, and Goldcrest 2 + (1).

A total of 191 birds were ringed in September, a relatively poor total given the number of visits (we have had only 6 lower September totals since 2000), although despite the number of visits very few of them were from first light, which is usually the best couple of hours for catching at this time of year. This brings our YTD to 1,709.
