July week 3, plus a Canada Goose recovery, and a "quick" Reed Warbler movement.

On Saturday 18th, George and Ron were doing an "extra" CES visit in the scrub/garden, and Jerry was in rb2 doing a RAS visit. The catches were a respectable 24 + (6) - incl a fledged Tawny Owl, in the garden, but a disappointing 11 + (5) - although two more adult Reed Warbler for the RAS, in the reed bed. The species mix in the garden was Tawny Owl 1, Song Thrush 3, Blackbird 6 + (1), Dunnock 2, Chiffchaff 5, Blackcap 2 + (2), Reed Warbler 4 + (2), Goldcrest 1 and Bullfinch (1). The species mix in the reed bed was Robin 1, Wren 1, Reed Warbler 7 + (5), Blackcap 1 and Blue Tit 1.

On 21st Andy had another short session in his Pennorth garden, for a Nuthatch, Blackbird and Great-spotted Woodpecker (heading towards our best year for this species, mainly caught at the Pennorth feeders).

Later in the week, the weather became more unsettled, but on Thursday 23rd, Andy did an evening session at the jetty, and had a catch of 8 + (2). Jeremy was there on the morning of 24th, and with conditions overcast and calm, the catch of 21 + (1) was only average, though brightened by the Kingfisher. The "overnight" species mix was Kingfisher 1, Wren 3, Cettis Warbler (1), Reed Warbler 10 + (1), Sedge Warbler 3, Willow Warbler 4, Blue Tit 2 + (1), Great Tit 1, Treecreeper 1 and Reed

A (this?) Kingfisher narrowly missed the net the night before this Kingfisher was caught!

On the same morning Peter & Alan J were doing CES 9, the session was slow to start but picked up later in the morning to end on a reasonable 25 + (5), made up of Dunnock 1, Robin 2, Song Thrush 5, Blackbird 3, Reed Warbler (1), Sedge Warbler 1, Blackcap 2, Willow Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 5 + (1), Goldcrest 1, Blue Tit 2 + (1), Long-tailed Tit 1, Nuthatch (1), Greenfinch 1 and Bullfinch (1). A female Chiffchaff was caught with (part of) her second brood, after having been caught with (part of) her first brood on the CES session in early June. Jerry was in rb2 for another RAS visit, and a catch of 14 + (13), made up of Wren 1, Dunnock 1, Song Thrush (1), Cettis Warbler 3 (all juveniles and likely from a different brood than the 2 caught a fortnight age), Reed Warbler 6 + (9) - incl (6) eligible for the RAS, Willow Warbler 2 and Reed Bunting 1 + (3) - incl a control.

Canada Goose 5179139 was ringed on 2nd July 1995, and its ring was found (with a metal detector) on 15th July 2020, at Longford Budville, Somerset. 9145 days, 104 km, 181 degrees. The date of the bird's death is not known (the ring may have remained undiscovered for many years), so a potential longevity record for the Group cannot be claimed. The movement southwards, however, is unusual for birds from the Lake.

Reed Warbler ANH3036 was ringed in rb2 (juvenile), on 7th July, and was caught by the Gower R Gp at Penclacwydd, Carmarthenshire on 17 July (10 days) and 21 July - 14 days, 66 km, 245 degrees. Another really quick turn around for the BTO's data management system DemOn.
