First feeder/birdcrop sessions of the new year, and Canada Goose recovery

On Saturday 5th January, Jerry and Rachel (new recruit) had a couple of hours at the hut feeders. Some of the feeders had run out in the previous few days (squirrel damage), but catching was still steady. The session ended on 4 + (24), mainly Blue Tits, but with more adults than on the Boxing Day visit. Andy then tried a short session (in the afternoon), at the Pennorth feeders, for a catch of 7 + (1).

Great-spotted Woodpecker (1), Blackbird (1), Robin (1), Blue Tit 8 + (18), Great Tit 1 + (3), House Sparrow 1, Goldfinch (1) and Chaffinch 1.

On Thursday 10th January, Jeremy, Ron, Andy and Jerry tried the Llangorse bird crop. The weather was calm, but with a little light drizzle, and a noisy chainsaw was tidying up the recently topped trees across the lane. The flock size had reduced since the end of the year, and although the noise did not seem to be affecting the birds, catching was slow. The session ended on 24 + (1), comprising Wren 3, Dunnock 1, Blue Tit 3, House Sparrow 3 + (1), Chaffinch 3 and Yellowhammer 10.

Canada Goose 5275832 was ringed on 26.06.2016, and was found dead on 08.12.2018, in the "Usk Valley" Powys (the distance/direction suggest a location east of Llangynidr) - 895 days, 11 km, 149 degrees.
