Much of the middle of the month saw alternating low and high pressure systems over the country, with strong winds and rain/snow, giving few opportunities for ringing. On Saturday 9th, it was cold, so Jerry put up a 30' at the nyger feeders for a couple of hours. Frequent net visits (because of the cold, just 3 deg max), resulted in 9 Goldfinch, + (10) mainly "tits" before they realised the sunflower feeder had been filled). A walk around the point flood flushed 75 Snipe and 3 Jack Snipe, mainly in a relatively confined area along the flood edge. The next day, most of Wales was blanketed in snow, and the lanes around the Lake were iced over for four days.
On Saturday 16th, Jeremy visited in the morning, but it was very cold, and he opted to do some fenceline clearance. When Jerry took over for the afternoon, he put up nets 4-7, it was very quiet until a Long-tailed Tit flock came through, just before dusk. The session ended on 3 + (12).
On Sunday, Andy tried a net at the nyger feeders, and this was also quiet (food ran out when unable to visit during the snow), he caught just 4 + (2).
On Monday, Jerry put up nets gn4-7, but in 4 hours caught just 1 Redpoll sp, and (1) Lesser Redpoll. This bird has, however, extended the Group's longevity record for Lesser Redpoll to 4 years 18 days (previously just under 2 years).
Summary ringing details - Blackbird 1, Dunnock 1, Goldcrest (1), Coal Tit (2), Blue Tit 1 + (7), Great Tit (2), Long-tailed Tit (6), Nuthatch 1, Treecreeper (1), Bullfinch (1), Chaffinch 1, Goldfinch 10 + (4), Redpoll 1, Lesser Redpoll (1) and Reed Bunting 1.
On Wednesday 20th, Ron, Andy and Jerry tried the Llangorse crop again. Bird numbers had increased to about 250+, of which about half were Yellowhammer. Despite perfect catching conditions, it was very slow going, with only the occasional bird finding a net. They were returning to their preferred sections of hedgerow, and were just missing the end of the line of nets. After several hours, the birds were eventually coaxed into position, and and about 25 were caught. The total for the
session was 41 + (2), made up of Wren 1, Robin 1, Blackbird 3, Dunnock 4, Blue Tit 2, Treecreeper 1, House Sparrow 7, Chaffinch 3, Reed Bunting 4 and Yellowhammer 15 + (2). The two retrap Yellowhammer were from the Llangorse crops from winters 2016/17, and 2014/15 - the latter being a new longevity record for the Group.
Canada Goose 5275812 was ringed on 26 June 2016, and was "fresh dead - within 1 week shot" on 9 December, at Llanfair Kilgeddin, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire - 531 days, 29 km, 131 degrees.
Redwing RL67191 was ringed on 29 October 2017, and was controlled just 10 days later, on 8 November at North Waffenham Airfield, Rutland - 197 km, 67 degrees.
