Early November, a "decent" roost and another Canada Goose recovered

On Friday 3rd, Sophie and Jerry had a quiet mid-morning to mid-afternoon session.  Of the 12 + (4) catch, the highlights were a Marsh Tit and 3 Lesser Redpoll.

On Monday 6th, Andy had a morning session at the Pennorth garden feeders, and had a total of 19 + (3) in just over an hour - two catches with net furled while processing the birds.  The species comprised mainly tits, but there were two each of Nuthatch, House Sparrow and Goldfinch, and a Coal Tit that had been ringed at the hut feeders on 3rd (2 km away).  In the afternoon, Jerry was ringing with the scrub nets, and it was very quiet, but picked up at roost time, to end the session on 29 + (6).  Last year, George played Reed Bunting at dusk (by mistake) and caught a few, so Jerry thought he'd try this species, as well at the more usual Redwing calls.  Our previous day max of Redwing is only 12 (23.11.2013), and the tapes brought in 11 Redwing, 9 Reed Bunting and a Brambling (first of the year - presumably the same female that has been visiting the sunflower feeder for the last week or so). Fortunately, for Jerry, the tens of thousands of Starling (flying over) weren't attracted to the netting area, and while Jerry was ringing, George and Roger were at the hide watching the Starling roost.

On Wednesday 8th, Carlton had a very quiet morning, before Sophie/Jerry took over for the afternoon, when numbers picked up. Almost half of the 19 + (19) catch comprised Blue Tits, moving through the scrub (after the sunflower feeder was filled). Although not directly netting the feeders, the birds using them still accounted for half of the catch.  Best of the day were 3 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Reed Bunting, but disappointingly, no Redwing came to the roost (numbers in the churchyard seemed to have fallen since 6th).

Canada Goose 5275667 was ringed on 28.06.2015, and has been found dead (about a week - having been shot) on 04.11.2017 at Whitchurch, Wrexham. 860 days, 121 km, 17 degrees.
