Another three Blackcap taping sessions produced few of the target species, with Chiffchaff the most regularly caught.
On Saturday 23rd, Andy and Jerry had a catch of 19 + (5).
On Sunday 24th, Jeremy and Robin (both with sporting injuries - broken thumb and head stitches respectively), still managed a session, and caught 18 + (5).
On Monday 25th, Jerry caught just 15 + (1), but finished early to look at the Goldfinch flock at Ty Mawr, and assess the catching potential. When taking down the nets, there was a Hornet in gn7, after carefully snipping individual strands to release it, he ended with a 3" hole !!
The mix for the three sessions was Robin 1 + (3), Dunnock 1 + (1), Blackbird 1, Chiffchaff 24 + (1), Blackcap 4, Goldcrest 8 + (3), Blue Tit 3 + (3), Great Tit 3, Treecreeper 2 and Bullfinch 5.
Most of the last week of September was mainly wet and breezy, and not conducive for mist netting. The month ended on 237 ringed, bringing our YTD to 2167. Both Chiffchaff and Goldcrest are now the second highest number we have ringed in a year; still some way short of our highest catch - Chiffchaff 238 (308 in 2010), and Goldcrest 42 (75 in 2008), but with October usually being a good month for both species, numbers are likely to increase.
Canada Goose 5266359 was ringed on 29 June 2014, and was found fresh dead at Allenton, Derby, on 25 Sept 2017 - 1184 days, 163 km, 49 degrees. A north east movement is fairly typical for Lake birds, but they do not normally move as far as this (though we have also had a few that have gone further north).
