November week 1
On Tuesday 2nd, Tony kicked off the month with a session at the sunflower feeders, and caught 6 + (13). It was reasonably quiet (for feeder ringing), with a predictable surplus of retrap tits. The main problem he experienced was the breeze causing the net to fill up with leaves (a regular problem at this time of year, but should soon be over). Large flocks of thrushes were in the area - one flock of c150 - mainly Redwing, was followed by another of c100 a couple of hours later, but this time almost all Fieldfare. Both flocks lingered in the garden and shelterbelt area, and several Siskin were around our gn4-7 net area.
On Thursday and Friday, Jerry was back in the scrub area, trying a variety of tapes (mainly Redpoll/Siskin and Redwing). Both days were reasonably calm, and resulted in catches of 7 + (9) on Thursday - which included 6 Lesser Redpoll and a Blackcap, and 15 + (5) on Friday - which included 9 + (1) Lesser Redpoll and 3 Siskin. The Lesser Redpoll was a control - (Z985557) an adult female. At 10am on the Friday, a group of six noisey Whooper Swan announced their arrival, before settling near the western reed-bed. At 12 (and again at 1pm), they flew off in the direction of Bwlch, before returning about 10 mins later, finally leaving at 2pm.
