Llangorse lake last weekend

On Friday the 16th of January, Jerry, Andy and Peter tried again at the feeder that had been installed for the BWT walk, improved conditions resulted in a better catch, with 37 birds being caught in two hours. The site is a nice one, with a natural gap between a hedge and some low shrubs being a perfect net lane. Certainly something to think about for future years.

Nothing really remarkable was caught, but a third Nuthatch in the two visits less than a week apart was a surprise and the proportion of un-ringed Blue Tit's also sparked some debate. With a only a small proportion of the previous sessions birds caught at the second visit it meant that in a little over 4 hours over two visits, over 30 Blue Tits had been caught with only roughly a third previously ringed. With this site being almost exactly between our two traditional feeding stations, where retrap Blue Tits usually dominate the catch, does this mean that Blue Tits don't wander quite as much as previously assumed during the winter.

Amy and Jerry started "dead hedging" on Saturday morning (17th), and, as conditions were "perfect" put a net at the nyger feeder after lunch for two hours, but didn't catch a single bird.
