A decent run of recent recoveries, and Late October ringing

Reed Warbler A559939 was ringed as a young bird on 16 October 2023 at Brasfemes, Coimbra, Portugal, and was caught at the jetty on 24 July 2025 - 694 days, 1353 km, 17 degrees.

Goldcrest RPX771 was ringed on 22 September 2025 and was caught in "Surrey" on 10 October - 18 days, 188 km, 112 degrees.

A young female Reed Bunting AJD2766 was ringed at the Pennorth bird crop on 10 December 2018, and was caught at Cors Caron, Tregaron, Ceredigion on 17 October 2025 - 2502 days, 56 km, 310 degrees. A good age, and a year older than our current longevity record for this species.

A juvenile female Reed Bunting BDE1444 was ringed at the jetty on 21 August 2025, and was caught at Seaton Wetlands, Devon on 16 October - 56 days, 134 km, 175 degrees.

Saturday 25th had the best forecast for the end of the month, and despite the gusty breeze Peter and Jerry were at Martin's garden for the second visit to his feeders. They had a productive catch of 38 + (2) with a single 30' net. The total was made up of Coal Tit 1, Blue Tit 8, Great Tit 3, Siskin 2, and Goldfinch 24 + (2) - equaling the previous day max ringed, plus a control.

A short spell of drier/less windy weather was forecast, so on Monday 27th Peter and Alan J tried an afternoon/roost in the scrub. Although it was still a tad breezy they manged a respectable catch of 22 + (6) - main species Song Thrush, Siskin and Goldcrest. Another visit on Tuesday 28th by Jerry and Peter had 18 + (8) - main species Lesser Redpoll, while on Wednesday 29th Carlton and Andy had a very quiet 7 + (8). The species mix for the three sessions was made up of Meadow Pipit 1, Wren 2, Robin 2 + (2), Dunnock (3), Redwing 2, Song Thrush 10, Blackbird 1 + (1), Blackcap 2, Chiffchaff 2, Goldcrest 2 + (10), Blue Tit 6 + (5), Treecreeper 1, Chaffinch (1), Lesser Redpoll 11, and Siskin 5

During October, we ringed a total of 160 birds - at the lower end of the totals for the last 10 years (which includes our highest ever October total of 350), and our YTD becomes 2813.
