On Sunday 2nd, Andy thought it was time to try his feeders again. The WRP survey had finished for the winter so there were no limitations for the session - (net and time nets set). Since the last WRP visit there had been a few habitat changes in the garden, with several of the large Cypress trees now removed. Despite this, and with sun on the nets, the catch was a very reasonable 21 + (11), made up of Blackbird 1, Blue Tit 4 + (8), Great Tit 1, Long-tailed Tit 2, Nuthatch (1), House Sparrow 4 + (1), Goldfinch 6, and Greenfinch 3 +(1). As the WRP period has progressed the species mix has gradually moving from mainly "tits" to a greater proportion of "sparrows & finches".
Monday 3rd saw Jerry trying the Llangynidr garden again, as Martin had returned form his short break away. Hardly any birds were about, presumably as no feeding for a week they had moved to one of the other feeding sites in the village. Just a few tits, 3 Siskin and 1 Goldfinch seen in two hours, and only 1 Siskin caught.
The month ended with feeder visits to Pennorth and Llangynidr (Andy on Thurs 20th, and Jerry on Tuesday 25th). Andy had a modest catch of 11 + (7), made up of Great-spotted Woodpecker, Coal Tit 1, Blue Tit 4 + (4), Great Tit (1), Goldfinch 3 +(1), Greenfinch 2, and Chaffinch 1. Although Jerry had a quiet session and only caught 9 birds (but all "quality") - Siskin 8 and Goldfinch 1.
The ringing total for the month was 42 birds (the highest March total for over 25 years), bringing our YTD to 221.
