Recent Greenfinch recovery

A Greenfinch ringed at the Pennorth feeders has just been controlled by the Mid Wales Ringing Gp. This is our first Greenfinch recovery since 2014, when the population had already started to decline as a result of the disease Trichonomasis. Andy has confirmed that late March/early April 20222 was a time of peak attendance (90+) by Greenfinch at the garden roost in the Cypress trees. Greenfinch numbers locally have started to show a small recovery in the last couple of years.

The figures in the graph are dominated by a couple of exceptional years where specific circumstances regarding the way the farmer was feeding his cattle allowed more Greenfinch to be captured.

NY78926 an adult female Greenfinch was ringed on 3 April 2022, and was controlled on 16 December 2023 at Nantmel, Nr Rhayader - 622 days , 42 km, 348 degrees.
