Canada Goose 5257846 was ringed (adult) on 3 July 2010, and was caught by a dog (but was released and flew off) at Ellesmere, Shropshire on 14 January 2023 - 4577 days, 111 km, 14 degrees. A decent age, but well short of our longevity record - 18 years, 11 months, 28 days. We have no other records of this bird.
Canada Goose 5233832 was ringed (adult) on 25 June 2017, and was shot at Llanvihangel Crucorney, Monmouthshire on 12 February 2023 (and previously seen at Brockhall Gravel Pits, Hereford, in autumn 2018) - 2058 days, 20 km, 107 degrees.
Canada Goose 5287953 was ringed (gosling) on 30 June 2019, and had its ring read at Caerlaverock, Dunfries & Galloway on 3 March 2023 (and previously been seen at Brockhall Gravel Pits, Hereford, in autumn 2019 and 2020) - 1314 days, 340 km, 359 degrees. Our first Canada Goose to Caerlaverock, though we have had a few others found further north in Scotland.
Canada Goose 5288000 was ringed (adult) on 30 June 2019, and was shot at Llanvihangel Crucorney, Monmouthshire on 12 February 2023 - 1323 days, 20 km, 107 degrees.
Song Thrush RL67224 was ringed (adult) on 8 August 2018, and was a road casualty at Llangasty-Talyllyn on 6 March 2023 - 1642 days.
The 7th Winter CES visit was completed on Sunday 5th by Andy/Jerry/Deb (potential new trainee). It was a frosty morning, so the netting was delayed until 10.00, but with sun on the nets the catch was likely reduced little. They caught a useful 22 + (6) of a decent variety of species. The mix was made up of Wren (1), Dunnock 1, Robin 2, Blue Tit 11 + (3), Great Tit 2 + (1), House Sparrow 4, Goldfinch 1, Chaffinch 1, and Greenfinch (1).
The 8th, and final, Winter CES visit was undertaken by Andy & Rachel on Sunday 12th. It was a little breezy and the catch of 21 + (9) was comparable to recent sessions, with a few un-ringed "tits" still finding the feeders, and a decent proportion of the Greenfinch roosting in the nearby conifers being caught. The mix was Great-spotted Woodpecker (1), Blackbird 1, Dunnock 1 + (1), Blue Tit 4 + (6), Great Tit 5 + (1), House Sparrow 4, Goldfinch 1, and Greenfinch 5.
During February, 43 birds ringed, making our YTD 80.
On 26th, Mark Waldron was checking for returning Barnacle Geese, and found five at the Cranog/Acorn fields, a bit earlier than their more usual return date. All had been ringed there on 18 July 2021, before wintering at Slimbridge and returning for the 2022 breeding season. He managed to read the colour ring on four of the birds - B21, B28, B30 and B35, but the fifth remained elusive, though Mark was able to confirm its blue ring.
