First Sessions of 2016

The wet/windy weather had started to ease, so on Tues 5th January, Andy and Jerry tried the Pennorth bird crop. They only had a couple of hours (before a shower arrived), but in that time caught 32 + (3). The species make up was Blue Tit 3, Chaffinch 11 (plus a few others releasedcwith scaley legs), Brambling 3, Reed Bunting 10 + (3) and Yellowhammer 5. The retrap Reed Buntings had been ringed at the Llangorse bird crop (6M on 05/03/15) and the jetty (3J on 15/07/15), but the third bird (Z225204) has been ringed somewhere else (details will be posted in due course). The Lake level seemed to have peaked, having come through the gate and about 8m into Llangasty car park, it was just lapping the main timber bearers of our ringing hut - so a fraction higher than the previous "high" of early 2014.

Male Brambling
Sunday 10th was the date for BWT's annual bird walk from Ty Mawr, so, with an opportune break in the weather, Carlton, Elinor, Carola and Jerry set a short net (at the feeders) to give the visitors some close views. In just about an hour (before the next shower arrived) they had caught 18 + (7), with a reasonable variety to show the visitors - Dunnock 1, Robin 1, Blue Tit 7 + (6), Coal Tit 2 + (1), Great Tit 3, Nuthatch 1, Chaffinch 2 and Goldfinch 1

Jerry giving a masterclass as usual...
